“One can understand the BBCu0026#39;s desire to remake u0026quot;Cider with Rosieu0026quot; and u0026quot;Lady Chatterleyu0026#39;s Loveru0026quot;, and perhaps even u0026quot;An Inspector Callsu0026quot;, although the last has at least two fine filmed versions, but their decision to remake u0026quot;The Go-Betweenu0026quot; was a misguided one.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eJospeh Loseyu0026#39;s 1971 version is one of those rare occasions in which everything seemed to be right – a top notch cast, beautiful cinematography, a terrific Michel Legrand score and a superb Harold Pinter screenplay. L.P. Hartley himself was moved to tears after seeing the film. So then why remake it? How could it possibly fare in comparison?u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eThis television version does not even begin to complete with its predecessor. Adrian Hodge shows little faith in his audience forgoing any subtlety in his dialogue and general characterisation. The cast are a pale and uncharismatic bunch. u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eSeek out Hartleyu0026#39;s novel and Loseyu0026#39;s film – they are masterpieces. Skip this one.”
