Powder Room (2013)

Powder Room: Directed by M.J. Delaney. With Sheridan Smith, Jaime Winstone, Kate Nash, Oona Chaplin. The comedy follows Sam, as her life is turned upside down on a big night out. When reunited with her old college friends, Sam is forced to re-evaluate her life and constructs an elaborate façade in order to convince herself and her friends that she has it all. But once her dysfunctional yet devoted trio of best mates intervene, her carefully crafted charade begins to crumble amidst the shots, cigarettes, ciders and toilet transgressions. Faced with some very harsh realities, Sam must struggle to remain true to herself and reassess exactly what she wants from life.

“I happened to enjoy this film, even though it occurred mostly in a womensu0026#39; bathroom.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eThe opening exposition is clever, and if one can set aside the disbelief that rises due to the amount of time the characters spend a penny (and other things) in the loo, this drama unfolds slowly but interestingly for the rest of the film.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eItu0026#39;s not a comedy per se, but some amusing moments do take place, some of which involves the British love of lavatory jokes.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eThe movie builds momentum and once the main characteru0026#39;s elaborate tale starts to unravel, the pace picks up dramatically and critical mass is achieved. It is a little overlong and could have done with some deletions, but being converted from a stage play perhaps the author did not want to leave out some items which were considered important.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eMore an introspective drama with some female fart jokes, than anything else, although I did laugh at Chanelleu0026#39;s diagnosis of her intestinal difficulties.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eAs all the good music finished about 1978, watch out for the Womensu0026#39; room attendant, who happens to have a magnificent voice, displayed at the final point before the end credits.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eAnd us men always did want to know why women like to visit the toot in twou0026#39;s….”
