Nazanin (2022)

“Many years ago, the Shah of Iran paid for an order of British tanks. A new government displaced him; the British, not liking it very much, cancelled the order but refused to return the money. Years later, the Iranain government adopted a policy of randomly detaining Iranian-British nationals. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was trapped inside Iran (though Britain was her home) for six years, some of them in prison, as a result. This slick documentary charts the struggles of her stoic but frustrated husband as he tried to get her freed. Thanks to the wonders of modern communications, his wife also features, in spite of her lack of freedom. Itu0026#39;s hard to avoid being impressed by the couple, although the artificiality of their situation, as well as the artificiality of performing for the cameras, means the tone is surprisingly refined and moderate much of the time. Only when Nazanin finally comes home do we get a full outpouring of emotion. Itu0026#39;s a scary story of how everything you have could be taken away from you by the powerful, even when you are fortunate enough to usually live in a rich and (relatively) benign (though not guiltless) state.”
