Chevalier (2022)
30KChevalier (2022). Chevalier: Directed by Stephen Williams. With Kelvin Harrison Jr., Samara Weaving, Lucy Boynton, Ronke Adekoluejo. Based on factual story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the illegitimate son of an African enslaved and a French plantation owner, who rises to heights in French society as a composer before an ill-fated love affair.
“Chevalier has an astonishingly dull screenplay, with contrived dialogue that is devoid of subtlety. The story is executed in the most obvious way possible at every turn, and although I appreciate that it stays focused on its central character, it can never seem to settle on what element of his life it wants to focus on.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eBut in spite of these things working against it, I was never bored with the film. And itu0026#39;s because of the bold, visually stunning direction and more-than-solid performances. They can trick you into thinking the movie is really good.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eImpressive long takes make the movie much more interesting than it should be on paper, and these actors really do bring a lot of feeling to each scene, despite having almost nothing to work with.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eThere are worse period piece films, but this is certainly not one of the better ones.”
