A Field in England: Directed by Ben Wheatley. With Julian Barratt, Peter Ferdinando, Richard Glover, Ryan Pope. Amid the Civil War in 17th-century England, a group of deserters flee from battle through an overgrown field. Captured by an alchemist, the men are forced to help him search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field.

“u0026#39;A Field in Englandu0026#39; is exactly the film it tells you itu0026#39;s going to be: set entirely within said field, it tells the story of a group of soldiers from the English Civil War going mad from a combination of (the 17th century version of) shell-shock, their own religious beliefs, and an unhealthy dose of magic mushrooms. Itu0026#39;s brilliantly acted, imaginatively shot and scripted, and yet, having watched it, I find it very hard to say what itu0026#39;s actually about. Stylistically, and atmospherically, itu0026#39;s coherent; yet its artistic success is, apparently intentionally, not supported by logic. I think it does what it sets out to do; but what exactly that is, itu0026#39;s harder to say.”
