Dogs in Space (1986)

Dogs in Space: Directed by Richard Lowenstein. With Michael Hutchence, Saskia Post, Nique Needles, Deanna Bond. Two man are the key members of a band called ‘Dogs in Space’ and share a house in a Melbourne suburb with a variety of young music fans and social misfits, including a college student and a transient and apparently nameless teenage girl.

“This is one of my favorite movies, but for personal – not cinematic – reasons.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eDuring high school I lived without parents, and frequently my house resembled the house in the pic. It was filled with teens and early twenty-somethings who were trying to either get the hang of standing alone as adults or ignoring the fact that theyu0026#39;d passed childhood up altogether.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eMost people may not realize that the movie gives a fairly accurate description of that (sur)reality. It may seem shallow or pretentious, and it may lack in u0026quot;deepu0026quot; plot twists and turns. The thing is, at that age, and in that type of life you live without worrying about the next day because itu0026#39;s just too big a concern to deal with. Most will never live, or think/feel this way.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eOn the cinematic side: the movie is not for someone sitting down to u0026quot;view a good book.u0026quot; Itu0026#39;s more a chance to turn off higher functions and experience another side of the world (not just Australia, but the time period and lifestyle). Itu0026#39;s also important to note that this is not a Hollywood u0026quot;teenu0026quot; or u0026quot;young adultu0026quot; comedy – itu0026#39;s a drama with a lot of nonsense included, because thatu0026#39;s what life is like.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eIt really is a shame that the movie isnu0026#39;t more widely available. I still own it from the original release, and only one of the rental stores (family owned) in my area has a copy. Iu0026#39;m sure it would more than meet the price to release to DVD.
