Die Last der Träume: Directed by Les Blank. With Werner Herzog, Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards. A documentary following German auteur Werner Herzog as he deals with difficult actors, bad weather and getting a boat over a mountain, all in an effort to make his film Fitzcarraldo (1982).

“Werner Herzogu0026#39;s u0026quot;Fitzcarraldou0026quot; is a fine film which broke most artistic, logistical and financial conventions of good film-making. Herzog set out to take great liberties with the history of an historical character, a 19th century Irish Peruvian rubber tapper–and then, incongruously, abandoned the cinematic art of illusion to undertake some very dangerous filming in remote Amazonian jungles of Peru. One of the unfortunate consequences is that little of the danger is self-evident to uninformed audiences accustomed to illusion. Thatu0026#39;s where Les Blanks filled in the blanks with his extraordinary documentary, u0026quot;Burden of Dreamsu0026quot;–an essential companion to u0026quot;Fitzcarraldou0026quot;. There are obvious comparisons to be drawn with Eleanor Coppolau0026#39;s u0026quot;Hearts of Darknessu0026quot;, about u0026quot;Apocalypse Nowu0026quot;–especially as a study of directorial obsession. Blanksu0026#39;s film reveals u0026quot;Fitzcarraldou0026quot; to have been a much riskier and crazier project than u0026quot;Apocalypseu0026quot;. This first class documentary should be in DVD.”
