Valdez: Directed by Edwin Sherin. With Burt Lancaster, Susan Clark, Frank Silvera, Jon Cypher. A Mexican-American sheriff must resort to violence against a powerful rancher in order to get just compensation for the pregnant Indian widow of a wrongly killed black man.

“A former Apache hunter, who has lost his taste for violence, becomes embroiled in a running duel across a scorched, rugged terrain with a gang of gunrunners…all over a lousy 100 bucks…and honor…and a woman. This film reminded me somewhat of Charles Bronsonu0026#39;s first big box office hit, u0026quot;Chatou0026#39;s Landu0026quot;. The band of thugs, unlike the group chasing Chato, were up to the job of killing Valdez, but found their quarry to be more elusive than they had bargained for. Very good western, right up there with Lancasteru0026#39;s film of the same year, u0026quot;Lawmanu0026quot;. I still canu0026#39;t feature Burt as a Mexican, though.”
