That Sinking Feeling: Directed by Bill Forsyth. With Tom Mannion, Eddie Burt, Richard Demarco, Alex Mackenzie. Ronnie, Wal, Andy and Vic are four bored, unemployed teens in dreary, rainy Glasgow. Ronnie comes up with a great idea. He has noticed that stainless steel sinks are worth a lot of money and comes up with a complicated scheme: to steal sinks from a warehouse dressed as girls and using a stop-motion potion.

“WARNING: My comments should be regarded as – a sad old sodu0026#39;s musings on a movie remembered fondly from his youth! Iu0026#39;m not going to dissect the movie scene by scene. I wonu0026#39;t compare Forsythu0026#39;s earlier works with his best known or u0026quot;finestu0026quot; moments. Iu0026#39;m not even going to discuss any particular aspect of the film! Not the setting, the story, the dialogue, not even the individual performances! Iu0026#39;m simply going to say that I remember watching this movie (with my family) on TV back in the early eighties and laughing so hard it actually hurt! I have no idea if it has aged well or not because I havenu0026#39;t seen it in over 20 years but I will say this in itu0026#39;s favour/defence, u0026quot;That Sinking Feelingu0026quot; gave Glasgow a voice and a character thatu0026#39;s rarely been heard before nor since! Donu0026#39;t get me wrong, Iu0026#39;m not a Glaswegian so I have no personal axe to grind in that respect, I just feel that the human face of Glasgow (or Scotland for that matter) hasnu0026#39;t been depicted quite so sympathetically as in this movie. It seems to me that, when contemporary filmmakers try to present an u0026quot;honestu0026quot; depiction of the Glaswegian he tends to go for the u0026quot;gritty realismu0026quot; of the drunk or the druggie or the wife beating hard-man! That Sinking Feeling took a different tack and demonstrated the dry Scottish humour we all recognise (even more-so, we natives of Scotland) and perhaps thatu0026#39;s why we seem to remember it so fondly. Anyway, if you can find a copy, watch it! Just donu0026#39;t expect any cool CG effects or Seinfeldesque banter, just good clean working class urban banality and the comedic observations youu0026#39;d expect from a good clean working class director feeling his way!u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eIncidentally, sometime back in 1992/3 I met the redheaded actor (shamefully I canu0026#39;t recall his name right now) from u0026quot;That Sinking Feelingu0026quot; working in Stirling castle, conducting tours and the like! Not only does he star in one of my favourite productions, he is also an all round, really nice guy!u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eBonus!”
