Hotel Coolgardie (2016)
49KHotel Coolgardie: Directed by Pete Gleeson. On a dusty highway between Australia’s most isolated city and its largest gold pit lies Coolgardie – where the arrival every three months of a new pair of foreign backpackers to work the only bar in town is a keenly anticipated event. Fresh off the plane and lured by the promise of an authentic outback experience, Finnish travellers Lina and Steph find themselves en route to a dot on the map – to pour beers, replenish depleted travel funds, and live amongst the locals. But their working holiday quickly deteriorates into a baptism of fire. Harangued by their new boss, relentlessly pursued by booze-addled patrons, and prey to the madness and malaise of an environment as claustrophobic as it is isolated – the girls soon realise that to meet expectations out here, they’ll need to do more than just serve drinks.
“As a Canadian who backpacked around Australia in the early 2000u0026#39;s (and now lives here) I was disgusted then with the way backpackers and in particularnFemale travellers were treated. The men in country towns were vulgar and Misogynistic pigs who thought a rape joke or advancement was funny to the staff at pretty much every pub I went to. This movie is a perfect example of just that. The scene with Pikey makes My skin crawl and I was glad the filmnCrew was there.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eThe movie should be shown on the plane to travellers on their way to Oz.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eI like how the employment company staff member never shows her face, I wouldnu0026#39;t want people to know I was facilitating this garbage work either.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eLiving here now for over 15 years I know this isnu0026#39;t the case everywhere but this story is not uncommon.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eGross, sad, creepy, wolf creekish and pathetic is the only way to describe this movie… donu0026#39;t bother.”
