Nur nicht Millionär sein: Directed by Arthur H. Nadel. With Elvis Presley, Shelley Fabares, Will Hutchins, Bill Bixby. The heir to an oil fortune trades places with a water-ski instructor at a Florida hotel to see if girls will like him for himself, rather than his father’s money.

“As weird as this sounds, Iu0026#39;ve always preferred the Elvis movies that arenu0026#39;t considered among his best. His best include u0026quot;Jailhouse Rock,u0026quot; u0026quot;Loving Youu0026quot; and u0026quot;Wild In The Country.u0026quot; You know, the heavier, more serious early ones.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eNo, Iu0026#39;ll take his later films – you got it, the dumb, stupid, oh-so light ones. Films like u0026quot;Tickle Me,u0026quot; u0026quot;Girl Happy,u0026quot; u0026quot;Spinoutu0026quot; and u0026quot;Double Trouble.u0026quot; And u0026quot;Clambake.u0026quot; The plots were always mindless fun and u0026quot;Clambakeu0026quot; is no different.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eElvis was almost always a moody, brooding loner in the early films. He usually played unappreciative guys with chips on his shoulder the size of the Rock of Gibraltar. The characters in those films are guys Iu0026#39;d have little desire to know.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eHowever, the guys he played in his later movies arenu0026#39;t that way at all. Theyu0026#39;re nice, decent, upstanding, fun-loving fellas. I like those guys. I like watching them as heroes, as leading characters in fun, dumb little movies. Hence, I like those movies a lot more. I couldnu0026#39;t give a ratu0026#39;s rear about appraising them as serious films because theyu0026#39;re not.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eIn his silly mindless mid-u0026#39;60s films, Elvis always had a goofy main sidekick. Here in u0026quot;Clambake,u0026quot; itu0026#39;s Will Hutchins, who starred in one of Warner brothersu0026#39; classic u0026#39;60s television westerns, u0026quot;Sugarfoot.u0026quot; And believe me, Hutchins can goof it up with the best of them.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eThe two wise, sage, old guys are (1) old pro James Gregory and (2) Bette Davisu0026#39; ex, Gary Merrill, who, if you really look, often looked as though he hated whatever film he was in.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eElvisu0026#39; Number One girl, Shelly Fabares plays the gal Elvis competes for with Bill u0026quot;My Favorite Martianu0026quot; Bixby. There are also plenty of Elvis Girls around, as usual.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eAlas, there are no true classics or any memorable songs in the entire film. Tunes like u0026quot;High Hopesu0026quot; clone u0026quot;Confidenceu0026quot; arenu0026#39;t either.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eu0026quot;Clambakeu0026quot; ainu0026#39;t no u0026quot;Tickle me,u0026quot; but itu0026#39;s still great fun!”
