The Salzburg Festival: Directed by Tony Palmer. With Wilhelm Backhaus, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Klaus Maria Brandauer. Two incomplete opera buffo fragments composed by Mozart three years before Figaro, Lo Sposo Deluso (The Deluded Bridegroom), which details the travails of a deluded bridegroom and L’Oca del Cairo (The Goose from Cairo) about a girl imprisoned in a tower by her father, suffered from weak plots and librettos. Director Joachim Schlomer got round this by having a master of ceremonies in a non-singing role explaining the intricacies of the plots. Despite glorious ensembles and melodies from the mature Mozart, these operas never achieved popularity.

“I never cease to marvel at Tony Palmeru0026#39;s incredible gift for making films. This comprehensive, enthralling film about the Salzburg Festival continues to add to his impressive body of work. While other filmmakers reap more publicity and probably make more money, Tony Palmer quietly produces masterpiece after masterpiece.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eIf Tony Palmer isnu0026#39;t among the finest filmmakers in the world, then Iu0026#39;ll eat my hat: the same hat Iu0026#39;ve taken off (after Robert Schumannu0026#39;s decree) in acknowledgment of his genius.u003cbr/u003eu003cbr/u003eThankfully, more and more of this great artistu0026#39;s work is becoming available on DVD.
