User Reviews: Block Z is an action horror zombie film and is the latest work By Mikhail Red. It follows a group of strangers banding together in order to survive the zombie infection inside the San Lazaro campus. It features Joshua Garcia, Julia Barretto, Ian Veneracion and Dimples Romana along with an ensemble cast in supporting roles.
Now when I heard of Mikhail Red making another thriller film, I was hoping that it could be a great development for him as I had mixed feelings towards his 2019’s Eerie and Dead Kids, both of which had a weak story line despite strong performances of the cast.

The story of Block Z was actually pretty good. I liked how they situated the characters in such a simple yet complex school setting that features different places the protagonists go through in order to find an escape route. The cast themselves, particularly Garcia, Barretto, Veneracion and Romana did a great job in performing their respective roles. The zombie effects are also in pretty good shape, kind of like Brad Pitt’s World War Z.

The only problem that I had with this film is just the execution of the story and the importance of the rest of the characters. Some parts of the story were kind of boring and confusing at times and that the filmmakers could have done more to it. The supporting characters weren’t given that much of great emphasis in the third act of the film, like they were all not that much to sympathize with.

Block Z was nonetheless I find an improvement from Mikhail Red’s previous 2018 works. A very good horror film that even I did not expect it would reach my expectations.
