The Story of Gilbert and Sullivan: Directed by Sidney Gilliat. With Robert Morley, Maurice Evans, Eileen Herlie, Martyn Green. The common career of W.S. Gilbert,a barrister turned comic writer, and Arthur Sullivan, a classic composer turned converted against his will to light music, who wrote fourteen operettas between 1871 and 1896, to great public acclaim.

“Much was made of u0026quot;Topsy Turvyu0026quot; when it came out, but if itu0026#39;s Gu0026amp;S music youu0026#39;re interested in, thereu0026#39;s no comparison. The Great Gu0026amp;S wins hands down. Wonderful Maurice Evans, even better Robert Morley, and plenty of operetta excerpts. Wish the filmu0026#39;s color quality had held up better with time, and of course todayu0026#39;s sound would be better, but this is still a joy to watch and listen to. Wish they had included Princess Ida and Utopia, Ltd., but you canu0026#39;t have everything.”
